Virginia Mountaintop Elopement

The Elopement of Blake + Aaliyah

Some love stories don’t go according to plan; and that’s what makes them unforgettable. When Aaliyah reached out about her elopement, it felt like coming full circle. I had photographed her senior portraits years ago, and to now stand beside her and Blake as they promised forever? That kind of trust is a gift.

The original plan was both bold and beautiful; hike up a mountaintop, say their vows with a view stretched wide beneath them. But Virginia had other ideas. Virginia, as it turns out, frequently does. As we made our way toward the summit, the sky opened. Lightning cracked. Thunder rumbled through the ground. It wasn’t safe.. not for anyone; so we turned back. And I swear, sometimes what feels like a detour is actually pure destiny.

We ended up in a field just outside Pearisburg. Unplanned. Unpolished. Perfect. The clouds rolled in like a curtain call, and the rain followed close behind. But instead of running from it, they leaned in. We all did.

There, in the middle of that storm, they said their vows. Raindrops kissed their skin like a blessing. The wind carried their words into the hills. It wasn’t quiet or controlled. it was wild and real. The very type of moment that doesn’t need styling or staging. Just two people, fully present, fully in love.

And then came the laughter.

They danced. They played. We chased light and leaned into the downpour until we were soaked and breathless and completely, fully alive. Every photo we took that day is heavy with feeling. The kind of images that don’t show a wedding… no, they remember it. They remember the laughter, the love, the sheer magic and wildness of that day.

Frame by frame, smiling like they had the whole world in their hands. Because they did. They had each other.

The storm didn’t ruin anything. It elevated everything. It wrapped their elopement in a kind of untamed elegance.. moody, intimate, unforgettable. That’s what we live for at River Songs Photos: the unplanned, the undone, the deeply human moments that slip into your soul and stay.

This… was a love story told in thunder, vows, and soaked shoulders. And I’ll carry the memory of it always. It was the darkest, heaviest storm I have encountered here in VA.. and what an honor it was to endure it with these two.
